Serena Williams Has Been Given a Wild Card Entry for Her Return to Wimbledon

Serena Williams, the seven-time Wimbledon champion, will return to the grass courts of SW19 later this month after being granted a wild card entry to arguably the most famous tennis tournament in the world.

Wimbledon announced Tuesday that Williams will compete in the ladies’ singles.

The American also hinted at the big news: “SW and SW19,” Williams wrote on Instagram on Tuesday. “It’s a date. 2022, see you there.” SW19 is a zip code district in Southwest London that includes Wimbledon and other boroughs.

The photo on social media showed her standing on a grass court wearing white sneakers.

Williams has not competed since an injury forced her to retire in the first round of Wimbledon last year.

The 23-time major champion last competed in the Wimbledon final in 2019, losing to Simona Halep, who now works with Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou.

Williams will first return to the court next week in Eastbourne for the LTA’s Rothesay International, where she will compete in the doubles event alongside Tunisia’s world No. 4 Ons Jabeur, in what will be her first tournament appearance in nearly a year, according to the tournament.

Serena Williams, widely regarded as the GOAT of women’s tennis, says she still hopes to break Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slam titles.

“I should have been at 30 or 32 (grand slam singles titles),” Williams said earlier this year to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour.

“I should have had it (the record), really, I’ve had many opportunities to have it. But I’m not giving up.”

Williams was forced to miss the Australian Open in January due to medical advice, announcing in December that she wasn’t “where I need to be physically to compete.”

Wimbledon is set to take place at the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club from June 27 to July 10.
