Aldine Square, a historic residential area, was erected in 1874 by U.P. Smith. Situated between Vincennes Avenue on the east, Eden Avenue on the west, and 37th and 38th Streets on the north and south, the neighborhood was comprised of 42 brick and limestone houses encircling a park featuring a picturesque pond.

The location was originally paved with cedar blocks and homes were distinguished by their “Aldine Square” street address. In 1877, the Chicago Tribune described it as “the most charming of all the beautiful places of residence in the city.” The area’s peak of elegance was reached in the 1880s.
