New Jersey’s Female Prison Removes Transgender Woman Who Impregnated 2 Inmates

A transgender inmate who impregnated two women while incarcerated at Edna Mahan has been moved.

Demi Minor, 27, was transferred to Garden State Youth Correctional Facility in Burlington County last month.

He said the DOC moved Minor to the vulnerable unit and she’s the only female prisoner there. Sperrazza couldn’t comment on the DOC’s housing actions for Minor due to privacy policies.

Minor is serving a 30-year manslaughter sentence and is eligible for parole in 2037.

She and her lawyer couldn’t be reached Friday.

A July 5 post on Minor’s website claims corrections officers beat her during the transfer to Garden State Youth Correctional facility.

The DOC couldn’t comment but is investigating.

“NJDOC cannot comment on active investigations,” it said. “The Department has zero tolerance for abuse, and inmate and staff safety are paramount.”

Three months ago, NJ Advance Media reported Minor impregnated two women during “consensual sexual relationships.”

State corrections officials have faced allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation by correctional officers for a decade.

It also highlighted New Jersey’s transgender prisoner policy, established in 2021 after a settlement with the ACLU of New Jersey. The DOC policy required transgender prisoners to be housed by gender. The settlement agreement required the policy to last a year. Last month ended.

Sperrazza said the DOC is reviewing its policy for housing transgender inmates in order to make minor changes.

He said decisions about an inmate’s housing, like Minor’s, “are made within the settlement agreement, which considers gender identity, health, and safety.”

Advocates hailed the settlement agreement as a necessary reform that moved New Jersey to the forefront of trans rights along with states like California and Massachusetts that have implemented policies on how to house and treat transgender prisoners.

According to a 2020 NBC News investigation, most transgender inmates in the U.S. are housed according to their birth gender and often face violence and harassment.
